The Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Ondo State has berated the state government led by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for its unfair labor practices and anti-workers policies.
The Congress said Mr. Akeredolu in his deliberate attempt was shortchanging the civil servants in the workforce of the state their welfare and benefits.
It stated this in an electronic statement issued on Thursday in Akure.
Ekundayo Soladoye, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress signed the statement obtained by Sahara Reporters.
Comrade Soladoye said the workers are embittered about their unpaid arrears mostly as Christmas is nearing the corner.
He disclosed that all effort being made by the joint labor leaders to address the welfare of dying workers in the state was being frustrated by Mr. Akeredolu.
He expressed bitterness at the long list of issues concerning the worker’s welfare that the governing All Progressive Congress (APC) government in the state has its closed blind eyes to.
“The issues range from workers 2017 promotion, payment of 2017 leave bonuses, remittance of deductions, payment of arrears of salaries/pensions and payment of 20% balance of 2016 September salary among others."
“We have compelled to conclude that the unwillingness on the part of the state government to meet with the union leaders to resolve these issues is a deliberate ploy to short-changed the workers of the state.”
Soladoye explained that the Trade Union Congress (TUC) is already giving Mr. Akeredolu’s government a seven-day ultimatum to address all the issues.
He argued that the failure to do so would force the labor workers to withdraw their services in all the 18 local government areas that make the state.
The labor leader vowed that the union would not rest in its oars at ensuring it get the best for the populated civil servants in the state.
However, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has said that the state is currently in a financial straight jacket, which is the reason while his government is struggling to pay the accumulated salaries of the workers.
Mr. Akeredolu who spoke at the swearing-in ceremony of the Permanent Secretaries and the members of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) held at the International Event Center in Akure, said that the state is battling with a paucity of the funds in its treasury.
“However, it would demand of all of us to be prepared to bear for sometimes particularly those who are in the civil service."
“We will pay for whatever we have and you must be paid and you must have a good Christmas."
“I can assure you, we intend that part of the arrears we owe you will be paid very soon,” he said.
The governor added that the state is determined to embark on aggressive revenue generation guide that will boost the state's weakening economy.
